Description
An early Brooch in the form of a cross in eye-catching carnelian.
The Victorians were well known for their love of “natural” jewellery, a trend which rode on the shoulders of Queen Victoria’s love of Scottish pebble jewellery – mostly banded agates; this charming brooch however, is carved from a stunning piece of carnelian, known for its translucent quality and delicate colour variations. Typically for Victorian brooches it is quiet a large size and its cross design represents a stalwart of jewellery themes. To the rear the cross features a metal mount and pin with a C-clasp, but this mount has been fixed from the front with two gold studs
Condition
Despite its advancing years this carnelian cross brooch remains in tip-top condition, some slight rounding to some of the edges but no chips. The clasp is still firmly fixed and closes tightly and securely.
