What to get the Belle Dame who has everything? An antique novelty pocket watch stand of course. This unique and very collectable item originates in Holland and dates back to the late 19th or early 20th century. Made in brass and styled on a spinning wheel – it has overtones of Sleeping Beauty; a wheel to send you to sleep and a watch to mark the sweet, slow passage of time. But enough of this romanticism…
The watch stand comprises a brass frame with three turned spindle legs, the top frame with flyer, flyer whorl and maidens and of course the main fly wheel. Accurate in detailing (if you ignore the lack of a treadle) and all parts which should move, do. The hook for the watch is mounted to the front of the fly wheel (see photos – but please note the watch in the photos is purely for illustrative purposes and does not come with the watch stand). The under side is marked “Made in Holland”. The piece is too small to take a man’s watch but serves beautifully for smaller watches.
This charming watch stand is in lovely condition. All moving parts intact and still sturdy enough to carry a watch. No evidence of damage (although being brass it could take the occasional clean and buff).
