For many collectors Venice and glass are almost synonymous and while not all Venetian glass (especially in the latter half of the 20th century) is of the best quality some of the most celebrated names in antique glassware do hail from that particular neck of the woods. This pretty miniature jug by Fratelli Toso is a prime example. Fratelli Toso (literally the Toso Brothers) were a Murano based glass-making empire. Formed in 1845 they revived many of the techniques and production values lost during a politically turbulent period. The family’s prospects waxed and waned but alongside their own production and collaborations with other glass works they survived.

One of the styles they are particularly known for is latticino glass. The direct translation is “dairy product”, this comes from the use of twisted white (milk glass) strands woven into the glass while still molten; the co-incidence that the result looks like lattice is rather neat. This little jug has panels of mint green ribbons alternating with the cross-lattice white glass strands. The green and the handle are picked out in aventurine gilt. The overall shape is (to me at least) elegantly swan-like with a bottle-gourd body, long tapered neck and up-swept spout. The design is completed with an applied handle. The piece is evidently hand made using blown glass and a rather fine example of the type. Stylistically we’d place this jug in the last decade of the 19th century or first decade of the 20th – a period of high production for the company.

Apart from some minor manufacturing flaws (bubbles and imprecise shaping) this late 19th century miniature jug is in immaculate condition, well cared for through its lifetime and clean.
