This gorgeous piece is the art deco equivalent of a lap top! Here we present a fabulous desk tidy from the height of the Art Deco period carved from subtle green onyx (the stone of choice if one couldn’t afford marble). It has a simple rectangular form with a carved channel in which to rest pens, pencils, erasers, paperclips – whatever your choice. On the flat surface sits a cuboid inkwell with domed, hinged lid. The inkwell is sat in a silver frame and has a silver collar where lid meets base. To complete the look, the main desk tidy and the lid of the inkwell are set with a narrow band of Tiger Eye – sheer office opulence!

The silver is hallmarked to London 1928 with a maker’s mark for George Betjenmenn and Sons. The base of the main tidy has a red leather(ette) cover with retail sticker intact. Interestingly, it seems this piece was made for the export market and has since wend its way back to good ol’ Blighty; the sticker clearly shows the words “Hardy Bros Ltd, Australia”. For something so stationery (sic) this piece is certainly well traveled.

Given the amount of air miles this desk tidy has accrued, and its general age, this piece is in remarkably good condition. As onyx is a “soft” stone, there is some minor fleabiting to areas, concentrated at vulnerable points – e.g. edges and corners – however they are proportionally irrelevant to the otherwise fine condition of the piece. The hallmarks on the silver are clear, and the rest of the piece is in excellent vintage, and still usable, condition.
